Between 1999 to 2009, News Corporation significantly expanded its music holdings in Australia Uk and America by acquiring the controlling shares in many media projects. According to report which was published on web side of The news corporation in 2005, the Murdoch and his family owned only about 29 percent of the company shares. Almost all of these shares were selected voting shares, and Rupert Murdoch take control of the companys policies. And in 2006, The News Corporation showed its intention to transfer its 38.5% managing interest in DirecTV to open new projects in new field. According to our case study Rupert Murdoch approaches showed that was not a man who likes to take with the regulators and participants. Mr Rupert Murdoch and his style is usually to conform and better still, to anticipate new laws and use his lobbying power to ensure they do not harm his business. But now a situation is evolving with the passage of time which gives us the good example of corporate governance, and one which will be closely observed by many others companies worldwide to look results and follow it. For example BSkyB, that British most powerful broadcasting business and its owned 35.4% of its shares owned by Mr Murdochs News Corporation and another example BSkyB is also owned by Mr Murdoch and his family to take control of the news Corporation. In latest press release of the news corporation managers from the ten largest institutional investors in BSkyB serious discussion that the companys independent director to defined policies for new companey. While all three had few common things like to robust characters, not afraid to speak their minds, they all enjoy a friendly relationship with their former boss were their main objectives. Were they to be appointed after November, their appointments would breach UK governance guidelines, and those of many other countries. And created problems. This case study explained that these people faced too many of the difficulties where one individual is dominant, who take all control on company or where there is an element of a family ownership. The companies like The News Corporation may be the only company in the West, in Asia and all most the rest of the world. Corporate Control Style of News Corporation: After the different deals in more than three years of wrangling over control of DirecTV and provides the apportuniries to Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, with the final component needed to fulfil his long-held ambition of creating a global satellite broadcasting network in world . Ahter this they buy to many shares in differet places like Direct TV about 11.3 millions in US, Fox News Coproration and Hughes also in US and all these deals have been a long time in the making, the benefits will be felt almost immediately in the competition it will offer cable, the richer services its provided to American viewers. And then they moved to EchoStar DirecTV merger was blocked in October 2007 by the Federal Communications Commission the US telecoms regulator. News Corporation finally prevailed at its second attempt. Liberty Media. Mr Murdoch described this process of pursuing of all these shares as having been three years of patient negotiations, occasional frustration but ultimately great satisfaction(Case study) Acoording to our case study all these deals remains subject to regulatory and GM shareholder approvals, but Mr Murdoch said News Corp and DirecTV had agreed to adhere to programme access regulations set by the FCC, ensuring that News Corp content is made available to all satellite broadcasters, as well as cable and other competing platforms. In the mean time Mr Murdoch will become chairman of Hughes, with Chase Carey, News Corps former co-chief operating officer, taking the role of chief executive officer. Rupert Murdoch Style of Management and its effectiveness According to en.wikipedia approaches Rupert Murdoch showed that was his style is usually to conform and give us clue to understand better and to anticipate new laws and ensure they do not harm the business. The plan of News Corporation expansion looks to the areas where growth is expected to be greatest for commercial media this includes continental Europe, Asia and America. News Corporation is almost as concerned with producing content as with owning distribution channels. Aside from tried and tested filmed entertainment and music videos, the fire winners in global television are news, animation and sports. Willingness to accept changes in terms of management approach to meet the needs of the global market to investing in new businesses and generating new trends in the media and broadcasting industry than acquiring and buying existing companies. Consideration of the shareholders and maintaining good relationship among shareholders to enhance market share and their strengthening bargaining power as well as market position through the use of purchasing on their supply chain, specifically for Sun and Times newspaper and their Raising investment fund through the use of bank loans and loans from other financial institution that offers minimal interest. General Opinion on Rupert Murdoch Strategic Vision The informations from press release 2003 the strategic vision of Mr. Rupert Murdoch can be understandable by the example of year 2003, when News Corporation recovered itself from the record losses in the two preceding years and the revenues at News Corporation reached over A$1.8bn and assets were stated as A$67.7bn. Therefore, the failures in the last two years and then the subsequent success of the News Corporation and its subordinate businesses were entirely due to the strategic vision and choices made by Rupert Murdoch. Whether there was a formal corporate strategy in the News Corporation or not, however, we can say without any doubt that the expansion in the business of News Corporation and its subordinate was mainly the product of Rupert Murdochs strategic vision. In annual report for the year 2003, Mr Rupert Murdoch outlined the different vision of the News Corporation; Throughout news Corporations evolution our goal has been to create a Company as unified, as logical and as creative as possible. Our vision has been one of a media company that is as well-integrated as it is international; one capable of delivering shot-term results as well as building long-term value. We have worked to build a company with the agility to seize strategic opportunities when they arise, with little patience for conventional wisdom. Some analysts describe the personal vision of Mr. Rupert Murdoch as an expansion minded person, who always wanted to buy assets, wanted to take over, to move around the world, to build his media empire, but on the other hand he also wants to retain the control.

“Icarus” by Edward Field Essay

â€Å"Icarus† by Edward Field is about a young man named Icarus Hicks who experiences anguish while living in the human world, but attempts to fly again. The original Greek myth of Icarus states that Daedalus, father of Icarus, made wings out of feathers and wax to escape from the Labyrinth (a complex maze he built). After constructing the wings, Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun; however, Icarus disregarded his warning and flew close to the sun, melting the wax. Icarus plummeted into the water where he drowned to death. The poem, â€Å"Icarus† exhibits how Icarus did not actually drown but swam to a city where he began to live a human life. References to the myth include, â€Å"compelled by the sun† (line 14) and â€Å"thought himself a hero† (26). Icarus is depicted as remorseful of his actions and wishes he had drowned instead. â€Å"Icarus† includes a number of literary devices, such as alliteration. In line 1, Field writes â€Å"feathers floating† and in line 3, â€Å"police preferred.† In the third stanza, there is â€Å"curtains carefully† (line 22) and â€Å"hates himself† (line 25). Field also describes the setting, the human world, as dull and mundane for example in line 11 Icarus is wearing a â€Å"gray, respectable suit.† The tone in the poem is gloomy and dejected as represented in line 13 with â€Å"sad, defeated eyes.† Imagery is perceived in line 1 â€Å"feathers floating around the hat† and line 24-25, â€Å"tries to fly to the lighting fixture on the ceiling.† In the poem â€Å"Icarus† by Edward Field, the main protagonist, Icarus, is struggling to adjust to the human world and cannot let go of his past. The purpose of the poem was to allude to the Greek myth of Icarus and demonstrate how greed may lead to a lifetime of regret and sorrow. Field portrays Icarus’ grief through his daily life in the modern world.

The Roles of Queens, Drones and Worker Honey Bees

Honey bees are social creatures that enlist a caste system to accomplish the tasks that ensure the survival of the colony. Thousands of worker bees, all sterile females, assume responsibility for feeding, cleaning, nursing, and defending the group. Male drones live to mate with the queen, who is the only fertile female in the colony.   The Queen The queen bee is the dominant,  adult female bee that is the mother of most, if not all the bees in the hive. A future queen bees larva is selected by worker bees to be nourished with a protein-rich secretion known as royal  jelly so that it can sexually mature.   A newly hatched queen begins her life in a duel to the death with any other queens present in the colony and must destroy potential rivals that have not yet hatched. Once she accomplishes this, she takes her virgin mating flight. Throughout her life, she lays eggs and secretes a pheromone that keeps all other females in the colony sterile. Drones A drone is a male bee that is the product of an unfertilized egg. Drones have bigger eyes and lack stingers. They cannot help defend the hive and they  do not have the body parts to collect pollen or nectar, so they cannot contribute to feeding the community. The drones only job is to mate with the queen. Mating occurs in flight, which accounts for the need of the drones for better vision, which is provided by their large eyes. Should a drone succeed in mating, he soon dies because the penis and associated abdominal tissues are ripped from the drones body after sexual intercourse. In the fall in areas with colder winters, worker bees mind the food stores and prevent drones from entering the hive since they are no longer needed, effectively starving them to death. Workers Worker bees are female. They accomplish every chore unrelated to reproduction, which is left up to the queen bee. In their first days, workers tend to the queen. For the remainder of their short lives (just a single month), workers keep busy. Newly hatched worker bees are larvae, unable to feed themselves. Worker bees feed their larvae a liquid called worker jelly, and they eat as many as 800 times a day to build up fat stores. After eight or nine days, larval worker bees spin cocoons and enter the pupal stage. Three weeks later, fully-formed worker bees chew through their cocoons; just a few hours later theyre ready to go to work. There are many jobs for workers, such as preserving  honeyfeeding dronesbuilding the honeycombstoring pollenremoving the deadforaging for food and nectarcarrying in waterfanning the hive to maintain the proper temperatureguarding the hive against invaders such as wasps Worker bees also make the decision, when necessary, to relocate the colony in a swarm  and then rebuild the new nest. Maintaining proper temperature for the hive is crucial for the survival of the eggs and larvae. The brood chamber for the bees young must remain at a steady temperature to incubate the eggs. If it is too hot, the workers collect water and deposit it around the hive, then fan the air with their wings causing cooling by evaporation. If it is too cold, the worker bees cluster to generate body heat.

Social Media Has Taken The World By Storm - 933 Words

In the past decade, social media has taken the world by storm. As a way to communicate with friends, family, and strangers alike, social media reduces the need for face to face interactions and introduces a world entered using only the touch of a finger. It is estimated that 69% of teens, aged 12 to 18, own their own computer and/or smartphone and 80% of those teens are active on one or more social media sites (Laird, 2012). Thus, a good portion of this generation’s social and emotional development is occurring while engaged on social media. We don’t always know if what teens are accessing are influencing them more positively or negatively, but what we do know is that teenagers are short on white matter, the tissue that ensures efficient and steady coordination throughout the brain. The connections between the rest of the brain and the frontal lobe, which is charged with foreseeing the consequences of one’s actions and differentiating between good and bad, donâ⠂¬â„¢t fully form until their twenties (Steinberg, 2007). Therefore, they are more likely to act on impulse without realizing there are consequences. Due to their limited capacity for self-regulation and susceptibility to peer pressure, teens are at risk as they navigate the realms of social media. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for individuals aged 10 to 24 and results in about 4,600 deaths annually (Laird, 2012). The effects of social media impact this rate of occurrence in several ways. Knowledge And The Act Of Knowing Essay - 1006 Words

Knowledge and the act of knowing could be said to be central to the experience of humanity as we define it, and indeed the study of these things, epistemology, is one which gets to the core of who we are as a race and how we interact as individuals with the world around us. In examining these ideas and forming a personal theory of knowledge, an individual, being confronted with one of the essential questions of human existence: â€Å"What is knowledge?’, can easily become mentally overwhelmed by its scope and complexity, as they might become physically in attempting to push a large boulder up a steep hill. I, initially being one of these overwhelmed individuals, was struck by the sheer enormity of the question as our class progressed through the unit, and began slowly to doubt all which I had previously held to be true. Though I appreciated, respected, and, in many ways, found the works of all the examined philosophers to be illuminating, I ultimately found my closest ally in doubt to be the great French philosopher Renà © Descartes. Though not all of his ideas resonated with me, those which did did so with a power never before experienced in my young life. Among the multitude of ideas presented in his Meditations on First Philosophy, those of Descartes which resonate with me the most are those of healthy skepticism and doubt and the criterion of true, responsible knowledge as being â€Å"clear and distinct.† Though separated by the space of hundreds of years and thus belonging toShow MoreRelatedDiscuss Key Aspects Of Indigenous Thought Throughout The Lectures And Work Of Horn Miller And Frideres1694 Words   |  7 Pagesexamples. ABSTRACT As envisaged in Kenya’s vision 2030, trade will be one of the key sectors to drive economic development of our country. The sector is the link between consumption and production within the economy and contributes towards the employment and wealth creation. There are tremendous potentials for trade to play a central role in driving and sustaining growth and poverty reduction in Kenya. The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), cuts across all sectors of the Kenyan economy but face various development challenges like overreliance on agriculture which mainly depends on unpredictable weather, underdevelopment of Information, Communication and Technology and lack of market information of local goods both locally and internationally. This project will provide a solution to investors and MSMEs by providing information on the various investment opportunities available in Kenya apart from agriculture, know about the various trade policies to avoid unfair trade and also provide a platform where local companies can upload their company profiles and the ministry promotes their products at trade fairs at an international level. CHAPTER ONE: 1. 0 INTRODUCTION The Ministry of Trade’s current mandate is: Trade development policy; Development of micro and small business; Fair trade practices and consumer protection; Private sector development and international trade affairs. The ministry will champion the promotion of both domestic and foreign trade through creation of an enabling business and investment environment as highlighted in this project proposal. The purpose of this proposal is to explain in detail the aim of the project, the methods used in the implementation of the system, scope of the system and budget and time schedule for the implementation of the project. It begins with the introduction which introduces the system to be developed. The next part is the problem statement, the literature review, the scope of the system and the requirements for the system. In the scope of the system we have the system functionalities and its limitations. Since the system is to be developed within a located time frame and budget constraint, it is imperative that the proposal also contains the budget and time schedule. This explains the time schedule for the system and also the budget for the system. . 1 PROBLEM STATEMENT Kenya trade industry faces a number of challenges: unsound business regulatory framework leading to multiple licensing and heavy or cumbersome regulations for SMEs which in turn leads to high cost of business transactions; Lack of comprehensive trade information on the existing and emerging markets to investors and SMEs. Lack of sound business managerial skills and exposure to international best business practices has hampered the growth o f the MSE sector. To overcome the problem a system needs to be developed with the springboard objective of providing Kenyans with a centralized location where they can get trade information and thus lead to economic growth and realization of vision 2030. 1. 2 OBJECTIVES 1. To develop a successful Ministry of Trade web portal 2. To identify conditions for successful implementation of a new improved system. 3. To enhance access of trade information to Kenyans. CHAPTER TWO: 2. 0 LITERATURE REVIEW Having collected information on the ministry of trade I was able to define the main drawbacks associated with the services of the industry. Information sharing between the ministry and the business people is not easy. Enormous opportunities exist in the domestic, regional and international markets. These opportunities should be fully exploited through the systematic promotion of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and providing information to them. It is crucial to note that as trade becomes free and global, technological innovations will become increasingly important, offering consumers more and more options at cheaper prices in the country and all over the globe. With this system in place all the requests for trade information, will be available to recipients at any given time. Therefore potential users’ are:- oInvestors both local and international. oConsumers. oOther ministries in the government that work closely with ministry of trade. oOwners of small and medium sized businesses. 2. SCOPE OF THE SYSTEM The web portal will aid in the availing all the details of the trade industry. The Benefits Of Music Education Essay Paper Example For Students

The Benefits Of Music Education Essay Paper Many band teachers will be happy to recount all of the ways that playing an instrument will make you smarter, but are they really true? Of course! Many studies have been done that show music education expediting learning in other subjects and boosting abilities that are sure to be used in everyday life (Brown 2). One of these studies was published by the Psychology of Music journal. It found that playing an instrument can improve reading and comprehension skills because of the music making process. In order to play a song, notes have to be read, the name of the note must be recognized, converted into the finger position or slide, and comprehend how much air is needed for a particular section (Matthews 2). Because math is used in every measure of music, playing an instrument can greatly benefit anyone’s math skills. We will write a custom essay on The Benefits Of Music Education Paper specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Division, fractions, counting and pattern recognition are all math skills needed to play an instrument, and which can be improved by learning to play scales, reading time signatures, and counting beats and rhythms (Kwan 1). Music education can be especially beneficial in young children because it helps one learn to distinguish different sounds, pitches and frequencies, which plays an integral part in improving linguistic performance for everyday listening tasks and when learning a foreign language (Wilcox 2). Another study done by the University of Toronto in Mississauga found that the average IQ of six year olds went up three points after they took music lessons for nine months, versus no increase in IQ in the control group of children who had no music lessons (Brown 2). Not only did music education improve IQ, the University of Kansas has proven that playing an instrument improves standardized test scores. Christopher Johnson, a professor at the Uni. f Kansas, said this was because standardized test require a similar focus and concentration that goes along with playing an instrument. Their study showed that students who participated in music education scored around 20 percent higher in math and English test than those who did not. A study by Boston College suggest that the root of the improvement academic areas due to music education was due to the stimulation and development of the brain that developed and changed networks of neurons in the brain involved with making music (Brown 3). Not only does music education benefit people academically but physically too! Some of the skills that you gain when learning a musical instrument will reap immediate benefits, such as using each finger on both hands to do something different and using you mouth to breath and play all at the same time increases fine motor control and coordination (Cole 3). Percussion, in particular, is very beneficial in increasing these areas as it requires constant movement of hands, arms, feet; you name it. Other instruments, such as saxophone, flute, violin, and a variety of others, help to develop ambidexterity and may help children become used to trying things that may at first seem uncomfortable (Kwan 1). Besides improving coordination, playing a musical instrument has other serious benefits towards one’s health. According to Suzanne Hanser from Berklee College of Music Education in Boston, researchers have shown that playing an instrument may lower blood pressure, reduce stress, decrease heart rate, lessen anxiety and depression, and enhance the body’s immunological response (Cicetti 2). Music education has also been proven to help decrease the effects of aging on the body’s ability to hear. A study done by Nina Kraus at Northwestern University in Illinois has tested 44 individuals ages 55-76 by measuring electrical activity in the brain related to hearing the syllable â€Å"da†, and she found that individuals who had three or more years of music education responded the most quickly (Cole 5). Her study is important because it shows that although hearing declines with age, music education can slow down the process immensely (Dye 2). .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 , .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 .postImageUrl , .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 , .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40:hover , .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40:visited , .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40:active { border:0!important; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40:active , .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40 .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1899c90b6e0667d21341e8ab8b710c40:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Music of Childish Gambino EssayBesides academic and physical benefits, there are also many mental benefits related to the brain and aging that go along with learning a musical instrument. Some simple mental benefits of learning an instrument include the ability to focus on the task on hand and the future at the same time, the ability to bring together different ideas into one product, problem solving, creativity, discipline, focus, and concentration (Lipman 1). One very important skill learned is the power of perseverance. Because musicians can’t play every piece of music perfectly the first time through, music education benefits people by teaching them that you need to keep practicing in order to become good at something (Matthews 1). As more is being researched about diseases of the brain, such as Alzheimers, and more people are being properly diagnosed there has been an increase in people trying to keep the brain as healthy as the body. John Carpente, founder and director of the Rebecca Center for Music Therapy in New York, said he believes that music is one of the most engaging and emotionally powerful stimuli and believes it helps people emerge from self inflicted isolation that comes with the Alzheimers disease (Cicetti 2). â€Å"Musical activity throughout life may serve as a challenging cognitive exercise, making your brain fitter and more capable of accommodating the challenges of aging. Since studying an instrument requires years of practice and learning, it may create alternate connections in the brain that could compensate for cognitive decline as we get older,† said Brenda Hanna-Pladdy, a researcher at the Uni. of Kansas Medical Center. So next time when a music educator or any music student tries to convince you that all the people that don’t play a musical instrument are worse off, take their words into consideration and pick up an instrument. It’s never too late to learn an instrument, and the academic, physical and mental benefits you gain will be well worth it. Bibliography: Cicetti, Fred. Follow on Facebook.  LiveScience.com.
